Asian-Pacific Perspective: “Flying taxi deals take off amid private aviation boom”

By Chris Stonor

While this feature article is Asian-based and looks more at private aviation, the second part focuses on Urban Air Mobility using the perspective that as the airline industry emerges from the Covid pandemic, “It has pushed industry players to rethink ways to reboot the travel sector, cut emissions and expand customer base, all of which are revolutionising air travel like never before.”

Avolon, Eve, Skyports, Yugo, electra.aero, Volocopter and others are discussed in the second half of this article alongside sentences like, “Flying taxis are becoming a buzzword in the sector, where McKinsey & Co experts stated last year that it was no longer a question of ‘if’ but ‘when,’” and “These craft are expected to be flying commercially during both the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, Japan.”

The article points out that by 2030, “the leading companies in the passenger advanced air mobility industry could have bigger fleets and offer many more flights per day than the world’s largest airlines.” It continues that flights will be shorter averaging only 18 minutes, but with fewer passengers onboard, between one and six + a pilot, these more frequent short flights would create its own operational challenges.
